Apparently, I'm a Non-Mom
So, NBC is running a contest for "America's Favorite Mom." There are semifinalist categories, where people can vote for their favorite military moms, working moms, single moms, etc. And my favorite category: the "non-mom" mom. Which is for "mothers of adopted children, grandparents and stepmothers." Because, you know, you're a non-mom if you don't actually grow the baby in you for 9 months. Because all those sleepless nights, all those hours of Candyland, all those hugs and kisses, all that time I've been caring and worrying and loving my daughter...that's all just babysitting. I'm not a real mom. I'm a "non-mom."
Guess my husband can call off the celebration this weekend, and my daughter can give the gift she made to someone else. No need to celebrate me...I'm technically a "non-mom."

it's outrageous from ANY angle ...

Non-mom, adopting mom I don't care what they call it the distinction is ridiculous. I am waiting to be a mom, my goal has never been to be a non-mom to my child, what does that say to my child will she be a non-child must she always be my adopted daughter? I just want to be a mom to my child why must we be classified as something separate?

My name is Jennifer, and I work with Edelman (www.edelman.com) on behalf of Teleflora’s “America’s Favorite Mom” program. Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this issue.
After closer examination, Teleflora recognized how this may have been offensive to moms who have adopted children… moms who are indeed real moms in every sense of the word. This show of insensitivity was in no way intended and Teleflora offers its deepest apology. It was always Teleflora’s intent to salute and celebrate all moms.
Please know that in response the concerns expressed, Teleflora immediately changed the name of the “Non-Mom” category to “Adopting Moms,” which has already been posted on its "semi-finalist" page at www.AmericasFavoriteMom.com.
I thought you might want to know. On behalf of Teleflora, I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day.

I guess this makes our kids non-kids, so I guess we can't complain. And if this is the case, my daughter owes me BIG TIME for some mighty messy potty training escapades!
I completely, 100% give up on the media's ability to ever remotely get adoption.
On the bright side: We got a mention. Our children's first mothers didn't even rate that.
Boo, NBC.
